Helmi have been very healthy whole her long life so we only needed to visit veterinarians for her scheduled vaccinations.
Only few month ago it happened terrible and sad traumatic accident for her. One day when we came home we found out Helmi has broken hip (and broken tissues between hip and body like later seen from X-ray…) probably from window-hunting of bird or wild animals which they can see at field from windows time to time, and her hop and leg seem to be got stuck between bed and wall, this was guess of surgeon after seeing the X-ray and doing surgery.
We were so deeply devastated and unhappy and we were afraid if orthopedic surgeon agrees to do such surgery for so very old dog as Helmi, 13 year and 9 month old when this happened. Dr. Marti Lasn agreed and succeed – Helmi was so strong including heart and condition that she went through surgery and anesthesia without any complications. We never forgot her eyes looking at us with bright and clear right after we arrived back to home after surgery. This was the same sight like when she was getting ready for whelping: she knew she can trust me in any situation, that she has full support from me and complete understanding between us.
Hour by hour, day by day she got use her leg, stand up, turn around and finally to walk again. Wound healed perfectly and Helmi had good appetite and patience, tho she started not walk but trot! Made me almost hysterical when I saw that first time ;) We added lot carpets for her, all floors covered and fenced half of room for her with puppy fences to have her safe area for walking and being.
It happened in September and at end of December she was fully recovered, walking so that one can not even see there was such serious surgery in recent past. She spend most of her day with her daughters and we took bed off from this room and made her very soft cratepad to avoid the jumping up and down, she walk free at outdoor with all the other dogs as much and how much she want and ask. I’d say her rear movement now at age 14 years old is much smoother than some old dog who have difficulties to stand up and walk – but look on your own eyes :) The video was made at her 14 year birthday in January, 22, it was freezing cold weather but she still wanted to come and go these few times for video.
Our sincere thanks goes to Dr Surg. Marti Lasn – we are deeply thankful that we can have our dear Helmi hopefully many more happy years !
Happy Birthday Helmi!
